An anticonvulsant effect
Charlie Abrahams had his first epileptic seizure when he was one year old. Epilepsy is characterized by episodes of abnormal brain activity. Often, like in Charlie’s case, the cause is unknown. Soon, his parents found themselves in the middle of a nightmare. Little Charlie increasingly fell into a seizure with muscular cramps and unconsciousness, upwards of a hundred times a day.
Charlie’s parents sought out the best doctors they could find. They tried all available medications, but they weren’t effective enough. Not even drugging him to a zombie-esque state eliminated the seizures. The constant episodes risked making Charlie permanently brain-damaged or mentally handicapped.
It was a race against time. The parents let him undergo brain surgery, wherein they removed a part of the brain from where the seizures appeared to derive. But the attacks kept occurring. The doctors had no solution. The parents were desperate. Charlie’s dad read every possible book about epilepsy. And one day, in a medical library, he found something. Something no one had told him.
It was a book about epilepsy that mentioned a diet that claimed to cure half of the children that had tried it, a diet that had been successfully used since 1921. The doctors that used it worked at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, one of America’s most prestigious hospitals. Charlie’s dad was astounded. Was it possible? How had no one had told them about this possibility? His doctor recommended against it, but he took Charlie to the other side of the United States, to the children’s hospital in Baltimore, and met the author of the book, Dr. John Friedman.
Charlie Abrahams got to try it. They removed all of his medication and fed him the specific diet that mostly consisted of fat. The frequency of his seizures dropped dramatically. After a couple of days, they had been entirely eliminated. Charlie had returned and didn’t even need medication. It was like night and day. But the story doesn’t end there.
His parents reacted as expected. They were happy about the result, but angry at the same time.20 Why hadn’t they found out about this before? Charlie was just one of many similar cases in Baltimore. How could numerous epilepsy-stricken children be cured there, while others didn’t even hear about it?
One reason is that there isn’t as much money in the diet treatment business as in the pharmaceutical industry. The dietary alternative is actually discouraged. Despite spectacular results, it was seen as dangerous alternative medicine. It was difficult to spread that knowledge. But Charlie’s parents weren’t just anybody. They had resources and contacts. They could change things. They started in 1994.
